Nestled in Oakland’s steep hills, Montclair Village is a picturesque commercial district near the intersection of Highway 13 and La Salle Avenue. With shops, restaurants and easy access to recreation, Montclair Village is a great place to experience a thriving Oakland neighborhood. Here are some things to do when spending a day in Montclair!

Breakfast and Lunch

Start a day at East Bay favorite Highwire Coffee for a seasonal coffee beverage before a meal or head to Sophie's Cuppa Tea for a wide variety of teas. The Montclair Egg Shop is in its fifth decade of serving classic breakfast dishes from their extensive menu or head to Yellow Door for made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, pastries, salads and soups.

For an Asian-inspired lunch, popular Daughter Thai and Chinese-American 5 Spiced Kitchen draw locals and visitors alike to their bright and tasty dishes. Looking for something sweet? Full Belly Bakery offers desserts based in flavor over sweetness and are known for their cakes and pastries!

Montclair Park & Library

Visit Oakland’s highest-altitude public library, the Montclair Branch, housed in a Storybook-style building. The branch offers many books on home repair, gardening and cooking, and hosts regular events for families. Between the library and the commercial Village, you can find Montclair Park, a 7-acre retreat with tennis and brand new pickleball courts, a duck pond, and a skate park. A Wild West-themed children’s play area is perfect for taking photos of your little ones!

Wilderness Hikes in the City

The Sacramento Northern Railway once served Oakland, San Francisco and Sacramento by rail and ferry. A portion of its trackway is now known as the Montclair Railroad Trail, a beautiful trail connecting Montclair Village to lovely Shepherd’s Canyon Park. The full trail is 3.1 miles and is considered an easy hike, thanks to grading for the railroad more than a century ago. By car, Montclair Village is a short drive to popular outdoor destinations like Redwood Regional Park and Joaquin Miller Park, which offer hiking trails at various levels of difficulty. For other recreational activities, Roberts Regional Recreation Area offers a pool, playing fields and picnic grounds.

For Wine Lovers

A long hike tends to produce a powerful thirst, and a nice wine is a great quencher! Popular shop Farmstead Cheese & Wines boasts a diverse selection of California & imported wines, cheeses, olive oils and hot sauces, as well as four wine clubs to fit every budget.

Around the corner, Perle is a luxurious, wine-focused restaurant and bar, featuring caviar service and an extensive selection of French wines. Montclair Village also hosts an annual Food & Wine Festival in the summer.
