Cannabis Tourism: Things you need to know before taking the Oakland Cannabis Trail

The East Bay has long been an environment that is cannabis-friendly, and Oakland continues to be at the forefront of progress with some of the best cannabis shops and cannabis-friendly events in the state.

Cannabis has been legal in California since 2018. No matter where you are in California, it’s important to understand what is and isn’t allowed so you are able to relax and fully enjoy the experience.

The Oakland Cannabis Trail is your trusted guide to enjoying curated cannabis experiences as part of your visit. Remember that cannabis is a tool for wellness, and if consumed mindfully, can enhance travel experiences in a special way.

Know Before You Go

The Basics:

If you are 21 and older, you can purchase and carry up to one ounce of dried cannabis flower and up to eight grams of cannabis concentrate infused-products like gummies, chocolate, or a beverage. You are not allowed to gift or sell cannabis to anyone under 21 years of age.

Consumption Tips:

You can consume cannabis on private property, but property owners and landlords may not allow smoking or vaping cannabis on their properties. Do not smoke or vape cannabis in locations where it is not permitted. Check with individual hotels for their policies.

It’s illegal to consume cannabis in public places. You cannot consume cannabis within 1,000 feet of a school, daycare center or youth center while children are present. Do not consume or possess cannabis on federal lands including national parks.

If you are new to cannabis or even if it’s been a while, for products containing THC, go low and slow. THC should be consumed with consideration of your surroundings. When consuming edibles or beverages, it may take 2+ hours for effects to set in.

It’s illegal to drive or bike under the influence of cannabis and it’s illegal to have an open container of cannabis in a vehicle while driving or riding in the passenger seat. If you have cannabis in a vehicle, it must be in a sealed container. Otherwise, it must be stored in the trunk of the vehicle while in transit.

Rideshare services, like Uber and Lyft, operate in Oakland if you are under the influence of cannabis and need a ride.

Do not carry cannabis across state or water lines. Even if you are flying within California, TSA agents may confiscate cannabis given they are a federal agency and cannabis is not legal under federal laws.
