Women have been trailblazers in Oakland for over a century, from Delilah L. Beasley, the first Black journalist published in a major newspaper, to Angela Davis and Fredrika Newton and their political activism with the Black Panther Party. Today, women are paving the way in other industries as well. Oakland is home to Chef Tanya Holland, owner of Brown Sugar Kitchen contestant on Top Chef, and Angela Tsay, owner and creative director of Oaklandish, a renowned and highly recognized brand representing The Town.
We celebrate women, womyn, womxn (however you choose to identify) as icons of Oakland as well as their establishments: the restaurants, the shops, the galleries. Learn about the different ways you can eat, shop, and enjoy the spaces created by Oakland women.
