Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club: Harnessing the Magic of Oakland
Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club seeks to harness the magic of Oakland and the power of sports as a force for social good.
Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club is a purpose-driven professional sports organization representing the city of Oakland with men’s and women’s soccer teams. The Club operates three teams: Oakland Roots in the national men’s United Soccer League (USL) Championship, Oakland Soul in the USL-W League, and the development team Project 51O in USL-2 and UPSL.
Oakland Roots, the men’s team, debuted in 2019 in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA), the third division. Following early success with multiple sold-out crowds, the Club quickly ascended to the USL Championship—the largest and fastest-growing professional soccer league in the world at the second division. In their first four seasons in the USL Championship, the Roots have qualified for the playoffs three times, reaching the Western Conference semifinals twice.
In 2025, Oakland Roots return to Oakland, playing at the iconic Oakland Coliseum, with the home opener set for March 22nd.
Oakland Soul, the women’s team, debuted in spring 2023 and has reached the USL-W playoffs in each of their first two seasons. Playing at Merritt College again in 2025, Oakland Soul serves as an elite pathway to professional soccer, providing a high-quality training environment while empowering players, one day and one game at a time.
Project 51O, the development team, focuses on transforming young local talent from Oakland, the 510 area code, and greater Northern California into players ready to step onto the field for Oakland Roots.
