Our Roots
Hi, my name is Matt.
Planterday is rooted in plant therapy, mental health, and in honor of my parents.
In October 2018, I lost my mother to cancer. The pain and grief from her passing left me unable to work, let alone get through the day-to-day. The only solace I found was in gardening when my partner Yumi and I landscaped our yard and grew flowers and vegetables. Digging my hands into soil and growing our garden was therapeutic.
When I was in a state to work again, I wanted to continue surrounding myself with plants because of their therapeutic power, so I got a job working at a local garden nursery. After a little while, I decided that I wanted to open my own houseplant business to help spread the power of plant therapy. This step into entrepreneurship is something my mother challenged herself with after we lost my father to suicide 20 years ago.
Based on my family's experience, my mother taught me some of my greatest life lessons, including: "Help starts at home” the idea that our own mental health is crucial and needs to be cared for in order for us to be our best selves to help others. It's because of my her that I want to run a business that intentionally gives back to my community, and it's because of my father that we focus on destigmatizing mental health and are official sponsors of our local suicide prevention non-profit, Crisis Support Services of Alameda County.
In spring 2020, we navigated Covid-19's Shelter-in-Place by selling plants online, in summer 2020 we started hauling around our renovated plant trailer and popped-up around town on weekends in collaboration with many local businesses to build our foundation (check out 'Our Blog' to see our past collaborations!).
In summer 2021, we opened our brick and mortar shop on College Ave. in the Oakland Rockridge district and have been happily parked ever since.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and support for local, small business.
Remember, everyday is Planterday!
