By Lee Foster An innovative culinary renaissance is underway in Oakland, and Rockridges abundance of new restaurants are leading the charge. The neighborhood has a medley of fantastic foods, but there are three restaurants in particular that are making waves. As you step off the Rockridge BART, follow your nose to one of these delectable destinations. Bourbon and Beef In the mood for a succulent steak? Or maybe a fresh salmon fillet? Bourbon and Beef has you covered. Consider starters such as crusted shrimp cakes or pork belly with jicama. Chef Munther Massarweh is the maestro here, blending his Jordanian and El Salvadoran heritages into a pleasing and savory mix. The drink of choice here would be a fancy bourbon cocktail (not surprisingly). The Barrel Room The wine tasting + small plates food pairing = the perfect visitor experience dream occurs just a few steps away at The Barrel Room. Sommelier Sarah Trubnik will likely greet you at the door. She gathers special lots of wines from around the world and instructs Chef Sam Paulding to prepare small plates that enhance the taste adventure. Consider ordering a few plates and letting Sarah choose two wines appropriate for each. You can even opt to take your favorite bottle home with you as a memento from your Oakland travels. Box and Bells Michelin star chef James Syhabout has also brought his latest eatery to Rockridge Box and Bells. Inventive dishes include the meaty Pig Plate, Box Burger and Bone Marrow. Not a meat eater? There are plenty of nibblings and small plates to enjoy. For Syhabout, its all about getting back to the basics at his third Oakland restaurant. Culinary Oakland is as diverse as the city itself. Local restaurateurs are pushing the boundaries, curating inventive concepts that are making waves worldwide. For the foodie adventurer within you, the restaurants in Rockridge are definitely worth the trip. Want to learn more about this burgeoning Oakland neighborhood?
