Hotel Industry Surpasses National Averages, Spurs Hotel Developer Interest

(Oakland, CA) Visit Oakland, the destination marketing organization for the City of Oakland, announced this morning during their 2nd Annual Tourism Breakfast that Oaklands hospitality industry is on an upward trend compared to last year. Visit Oaklands recent marketing initiatives and positive national media coverage were key drivers of the success. Visit Oakland President & CEO, Alison Best, shared the record-breaking efforts and forecasted Oaklands hotel and destination development plans. According to Smith Travel Research, Oaklands hotel industry surpassed national averages in lodging benchmarks, including:
  • Oaklands overall hotel occupancy was 79%, up 4% from last year, compared to the nations 62% occupancy rate
  • Oaklands hotel average daily rate (ADR) rose 11% compared to the national rate increase of 4.7%
  • Over the last three years, Oaklands Transient Occupancy Tax (hotel tax) rose 33%
  • Oaklands estimated annual visitor spend is $1.4 billion
  • Oakland welcomed more than 2.6 million overnight visitors in 2014
During the presentation, Visit Oakland moderated a panel discussion focusing on Oaklands tourism and destination development strategies with City of Oakland Mayor, Libby Schaaf; Caroline Beteta, CEO & President of Visit California; Rachel Flynn, Director of Planning & Building for the City of Oakland; and Deborah Ale-Flint, Director of Aviation of the Oakland International Airport. Visit Oaklands Annual Tourism Breakfast coincided with US Travels National Travel and Tourism Week. A press conference in partnership with Visit California immediately followed the breakfast, at the Lake Merritt Amphitheater.
