Watercolor Class - Texture and Effects

Watercolor Class - Texture and Effects

Want to try out watercolor or add a few techniques to your markmaking arsenal? This series of experiments with paint textures and effects is great for complete newbies as well as painters looking to make new friends and get inspired by creative play.

We’ll play with many tools and materials used to build textures and patterns, then share examples of how you can utilize these techniques in projects. You will complete fifteen 4x4 inch painted cards, one for each exercise, as well as combine your favorite techniques in a final larger piece.

Add interest to your watercolor washes and paint application :
Print a pattern with a painted wax sheet
Alter a color wash with water, salt, coffee, and alcohol
Manipulate wet paint with plastic film and fabric
Use frisket film and wax to preserve the white of the paper
Apply paint with a toothbrush, plastic card, and mesh stencil
Create distressed effects with sandpaper and a razor

Put your texture skills to work:
Create backgrounds for handwritten messages (Instagram anyone?)
Cut up textures to create collages
Decorate greeting cards, gift tags, bookmarks, and other paper goods
Add dimension and visual interest to your nature paintings with textured rocks, water, sand, and trees
Incorporate or layer multiple textures for stunning abstract paintings
