The Oakland Civic Orchestra, conducted by Artistic Director Martha Stoddard and Assistant Conductors Christine Brandes and Shannon Houston, presents its “Honoring Black History” concert on Sunday, February 24, at 4:00 pm, at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church, 1330 Lakeshore Avenue, in Oakland. The Orchestra is pleased to be joined by L. Peter Callender – renowned actor and Artistic Director of the African-American Shakespeare Company – who will narrate Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, and by soloist Christina Owens in Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges’ Violin Concerto Op. 5 No. 1. The program also includes Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade Op. 33 and James P. Johnson’s Harlem Symphony. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
