Huey P. Newton Day

Huey P. Newton Day

About

On Sunday, October 22, 2023 the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation will bring to life our Block Party to commemorate Dr. Huey P. Newton Day.

For two years, beginning on October 21, 2022 with the unveiling of the Dr. Huey P. Newton bust on Mandela Parkway, we have been bringing community together to celebrate the work and living legacy of the Black Panther Party.  This year, we will move the celebration to Latham Square, just under one block from our Dr. Huey P. Newton Center for Research & Action.  We are collaborating with other local organizations to make this day even larger than the previous two and we invite you to join us as an Event Sponsor.

As the day unfolds at 11 am, with our stage positioned at Telegraph Ave. and 16th Street facing towards our Center space, festival attendees will be greeted by the talented Prescott Circus youth from West Oakland’s Prescott Elementary School - performing circus skills, clowning, and walking on stilts.  We will again have the air filled by the sounds of talented and local DJ Nina Sol, who has provided the backdrop for our past two events.  We will soon be sharing our headliner and speaker line up, as the day will continue (with vendors and food) until 3 pm - and conclude at 3:30 pm with a performance by internationally acclaimed Bandaloop.

Throughout the day, we will have simultaneous programming in the Center at 1427 Broadway, including conversations with Black Panther Party members.

Our Foundation’s mission is to tell the truth of the Black Panther Party’s legacy and share it to inspire current and future leaders and movements. Join us in this work. Join us in creating a community celebration that honors this legacy. Be a part of history - as we focus ourselves upon the contribution the Party made to healthy living and communities, as marginalized communities continue their struggle to bring grocery stores to their food deserts, gain access to quality and affordable healthcare, to feel safe in open spaces, and much more.

Dr. Huey P. Newton Day is only one of many days we create to fulfill our mission and to inspire current and future movements and their leaders.
