Ensemble Continuo, a Bay Area classical chamber choir founded in 2023 and conducted by Christopher Pluntke, is stepping into the limelight with a performance of Maurice Duruflé’s “Requiem” for choir and organ at Oakland’s Cathedral of Christ the Light.

This mid-20th-century masterpiece for choir, soli, and organ evolves the classical themes of Gregorian chants into delicately atonal narratives that typify the harmonic innovations of the Impressionist movement. The all-French impressionist program also includes Duruflé’s “Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens” and “Psaume 24" by Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), a French composing prodigy whose Symbolism- and Impressionism-inspired work at a young age established her among last century's woman composers.

The nine movements of the requiem will be performed by the 32-member chamber choir with an intention to invite contemporary audiences into an enchanting dialog between music and space at Oakland’s Cathedral of Christ the Light. David Jonies, director of music and organist at Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, who has also held positions at the Westminster Cathedral in London, will play Oakland’s 92-rank organ (Orgues Létourneau Limitée Organ Opus 118).

Friday, May 24th, 8 pm, at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, 2121 Harrison Street, Oakland. Tickets $25.
