Congolese Dance

Congolese Dance

Congolese traditional dance, much like its guide and companion the Ngoma drum, is rooted in sacred ritual. Birth, rites of passage, courtship, healing, harvest, celebration, war, and death, are all captured in this traditional dance form. Stemming from the cultural legacies of the Kongo Kingdom, Congolese dance has many variations in style that reflect numerous ethnic groups now residing in modern-day Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa), and Angola.
