Joyce Gordon Gallery and Everett & Jones Barbeque presents "BBQ Queens," an art exhibit celebrating Everett & Jones Barbeque’s 50th Anniversary in memory of Dorothy Turner Everett. The artworks in this exhibit reflects various aspects of Everett's legacy; her resilience, talent and entrepreneurship.

Janet Barnes’s pastel paintings display family members as chefs who cooks to be compensated by the smiles of family and laughter of friends. Bahiya Spaulding is inspired by her grandma’s house and the women she watched that taught her how to cook; the pots, pans, skillets, and utensils that they used. It’s the stories, the laughter, and the memories Bahiya have from sitting at the kitchen table.

Virginia Jourdan’s portrait paintings portrays the late as poised, resilient and creative being that continues her social narrative with the concept of love expressed as peace, love, joy and freedom in her paintings.

Zoe Boston's acrylic and signature vinyl motifs, exhibits the process of a journey. Everyone’s journey has similar phases; the ups, the downs, the importance to keep going, and to trust God. At the same time, everyone’s journey is wildly different, and that is part of what makes us who we are, which mirrors the spirit of Dorothy Turner Everett's journey and legacy we now celebrate.

About Dorothy T. Everett and Everett & Jones Barbeque

In 1973, Dorothy, now a divorced mother raising eight daughters and one son, opened her first restaurant in Oakland out of a sense of need. With $700 that she had saved, a sign bought by Cora “THE ANGEL,” her best friend, fifty dollars to make a till (also from Cora), and a week’s line of credit from Harry Mock of Fair Deal Market, Dorothy went into the barbeque business heavily dependent upon the Lord. An old building on the corner of 92nd Avenue and East 14th Street in Oakland, in much need of repair and next door to the East Bay Dragons motorcycle club, was rented, and the whole family joined in the repairs.

The Everetts decided to name the new restaurant Everett and Jones Barbeque; Annie was the only daughter married at the time, to James Jones, a later partner in the business, continuing a tradition of keeping it all in the family that continues today. The stage had been set for five decades of growth and prosperity. Today, Dorothy's grandchildren are moving into leadership positions to see the business into the future. Dorothy Turner Everett's vision and hard work had given her the means to provide for her growing family.

“I thought that I would never earn more than 2 dollars an hour. With nine children, I always believed God would make a way for us. I had a dream. I wanted to build something that my children could fall back on. He answered my prayers” - Dorothy Turner Everett
